While he hung in the window all was pretty still—. Man set him by the well curb & left him. the men stood S. E. direction from him— 3 or 4 men shot at him, I think 4 they were at the fence— 10 or 12 feet from him. all fired at the same time pretty much— dont know whether Smith had his eyes open or not— I saw him give no signs of pain I did not see any signs of recovery in him— I did not tell that Smith’s eyes rested upon those who shot Smith— Voohrus, was one who shot at Smith. I saw the light while at the jail shortly after Smith was shot— about 1/2 & 1 minute after he was shot— The light was like a flash passing by his Body— No one went to him after he was shot and no person could get to him saw him have, the person, no knife the light frightened the man & he could not get to Smith— I never corrected any mistake in Book I put the advertisement in paper— the Book is the same about or I would tell it off told them to run for the Carthage Greys would be on— them. they carried off the wounded men— I cannot say how many carried them off & I [illegible] [know?] they had to be carried off. I am not mistaken I went to Scotts— knew him before. [p. [17]]
