Markham, Stephen
Biography
9 Feb. 1800–10 Mar. 1878. Carpenter, farmer, stock raiser. Born at Rush (later Avon), Ontario Co., New York. Son of David Markham and Dinah Merry. Moved to Mentor, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1809. Moved to Unionville, Geauga Co., 1810. Married Hannah Hogaboom, before 1824. Moved to Chester, Geauga Co., by July 1824. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Abel Lamb, July 1837, at Kirtland, Geauga Co. Led company of sixty Latter-day Saints to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1838. Appointed member of committee at Far West to supervise removal of Latter-day Saints from Missouri, Jan. 1839. Escorted family of JS from Far West to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, Feb. 1839. Returned to Far West and assisted in disposal of Latter-day Saint properties. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, before 1841. Commissioned a captain in Nauvoo Legion, Feb. 1841. Appointed counselor to Nauvoo priests quorum president Samuel Rolfe, 21 Mar. 1841. Elected lieutenant colonel in Nauvoo Legion, 1 May 1841; elected colonel, 24 Sept. 1842. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Ordained an elder, Apr. 1843, in Nauvoo. Sent to serve mission to Berlin, Huron Co., Ohio, Apr. 1843. Appointed to serve mission to Illinois, 15 Apr. 1844. Ordained a high priest, 7 Oct. 1844, in Nauvoo. Captain in Brigham Young pioneer company migrating to Salt Lake Valley, 1847. Returned to Winter Quarters, unorganized U.S. territory (later in Omaha, Douglas Co., Nebraska), Aug. 1847. Settled in Davis Co., Utah Territory, 1850. Served colonizing mission to southern Utah Co., Utah Territory, 1851, and helped settle towns of Spanish Fork, Utah Co., and Palmyra, Utah Co. Served colonizing mission to Fort Supply, near present-day Green River, Wyoming. Returned to Spanish Fork, Sept. 1857. Died at Spanish Fork.
