body got <up> between 10 & 15— there were guns fired before the trops got up two or three— I do not know how far the troops were from the Jail when the Guns wer fired Some of the men had their faces blacked a little with Powder [illegible] wiped their faces with their hand with black and done it descredly [discreetly]. I was 15 or 20 feet in front of Jail— I was not spoken to when they came up— they came up in single file in front of the Jail do not kno how many got over the fence or went up stairs do not know how they were carrying their guns— I saw Jo Smith when he feld from the window— I was in the middle of the road when his fell <I> think he was not shot when he fell— I do not know whether or not but think not— I was but a short after he feel [fell] before they left— there three or four guns fired after he fell— Did not or at the Jail or — Saw Grover he was running towards the door of the Jail before the killing Just as they were approaching the house — saw at the Jail but not when I first went there— the first I saw of him he was right there a little on this sid[e] standing in the middle of the road [p.
