An 1841 manual on bookkeeping explained: “All debits are not sums owing to us, nor are all credits sums we owe; thus, some debit items are owing to us, others (Stock) are sums withdrawn by us; some (Merchandise) are sums paid, others (Cash) are sums received; and the credit items also stand for equally dissimilar facts. From which it must be evident that these terms are used arbitrarily.” This same manual states that for cash accounts, “the sum on hand at the commencement, together with every subsequent receipt” were to be listed in the left-hand column under debits, while the right-hand column should list “every sum that has been paid out.” (Jones, Principles and Practice of Book-Keeping, 20, 22.)

Wilford Woodruff related in 1858 that a “sister Voce” from Boston sent JS a letter with $150 for the expedition, but in his 1882 history of the camp, Woodruff gave the amount as $250. “Sister Voce” may have been either Mary (Polly) Vose (1780–1866) or her niece Ruth Vose (1808–1884), both lived in Boston. (Wilford Woodruff, in Journal of Discourses, 10 Jan. 1858, 7:101; Woodruff, “History and Travels of Zion’s Camp,” 3; Compton, In Sacred Loneliness, 381–382, 386.)

Following a 30 April 1834 entry, JS’s journal details a “Record of Donations” that includes all of the entries, beginning with cash received from the East by letter and ending with Martin Harris’s contribution here. In addition, JS lists donations of fifty cents each from William Smith, William Cahoon, and Harvey Stanley. (JS, Journal, 30 Apr. 1834.)
This conference was held on 21 April 1834. (JS, Journal, 21–22 Apr. 1834; Minutes and Discourse, 21 Apr. 1834.)
JS received this donation at a meeting held in Kirtland on 17 April 1834. (JS, Journal, 15–17 Apr. 1834.)
Likely Ludwig Lewis, whom Nathan Baldwin remembered as being in the camp. (Baldwin, Account of Zion’s Camp, 9.)

In his reminiscence of the Camp of Israel, McBride stated that he had “put in between $30 and $40 dollars.” (McBride, Reminiscence, 7.)

John Tanner was a wealthy church member from New York. According to his son Nathan, he “owned sawmills & flouring mills & o[w]ned sum 2200 Acres of land, with houses & barns.” Nathan Tanner later declared that his family donated “very near half the money” that took care of the Camp of Israel’s expenses. (Tanner, Address, [2]–[3].)

In his autobiography, Joseph B. Noble recollected that he had “put in thirty Dollars (or about that).” (Noble and Noble, Reminiscences, [9].)

Clark appears on a few lists of camp participants. She was likely a single woman, as there appears to be no male Clark who participated. (Bradley, Zion’s Camp 1834, 270; Radke, “We Also Marched,” 150–151.)

Although written on the debit side of the ledger, information beginning here is a continuation of disbursements made.
This entry shows this payout as occurring on 21 June, but that is likely an error, as reminiscent accounts suggest that the payment did not come until after the camp began to disband in late June. Several participants in the camp commented on this disbursement of the remaining general fund balance. Reuben McBride said he received “$1- 5 cts,” while Joseph B. Noble said that each member received $1.15. Nathan Baldwin gave $1.16 as the figure, although he also said he received only a dollar because “the sixteen cents change was not handy to be made.” An entry in JS’s account with the Camp of Israel shows $1.16 as the amount of “consecrated money which feell to” JS at the end of the camp. JS’s account with the Camp of Israel has two entries for horse exchanges valued at forty-five dollars. According to Heber C. Kimball, Sylvester Smith’s horse died on 17 May, the day after JS told the camp that if its rebellious spirit was not quelled, “they would meet with misfortunes, difficulties and hindrances.” (Account with the Camp of Israel, ca. 11–29 Aug. 1834; “Elder Kimball’s Journal,” Times and Seasons, 15 Jan. 1845, 6:772.)

This was the amount JS put into the general fund, based on donations and other funding he had received. (Account with the Camp of Israel, ca. 11–29 Aug. 1834.)
This was also JS’s contribution. (Account with the Camp of Israel, ca. 11–29 Aug. 1834.)
