Biography
26 Feb. 1806–15 Oct. 1876. Merchant, millwright, land speculator, farmer. Born in Ireland. Son of Richard Law and Ann Hunter. Immigrated to U.S. and settled in Springfield Township, Mercer Co., Pennsylvania, by 1820. Moved to Delaware Township, Mercer Co., by 1830. Moved to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, presumably by 1839. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and ordained an elder, in Nauvoo. Member of Nauvoo City Council, 1841–1843. Elected brigadier general in Nauvoo Legion, Feb. 1841, and then major general, Aug. 1842. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge. Married first to Elizabeth F. Sikes by JS, 25 Dec. 1842, in Nauvoo. Served mission to Ohio, 1843. Wife died, late Mar. 1844. Excommunicated, 18 Apr. 1844, in Nauvoo. With his brother William and dissenters from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, organized new church, 1844. Cashiered from Nauvoo Legion, May 1844. Publisher of Nauvoo Expositor, 1844. Moved to Burlington, Des Moines Co., Iowa Territory, June 1844. Moved to Hampton, Rock Island Co., Illinois, by Oct. 1844. Lived in Delaware Township, by 1850. Married second Eliza Sowash, 13 Jan. 1853, in Jefferson Township, Mercer Co. Moved to Gratiot, Lafayette Co., Wisconsin, by 1860. Moved to Shullsburg, Lafayette Co., by 1870. Died in Shullsburg.
